ZOOMORPHIC ‘OWL-SHAPED’ VASE
c. 2300-1700 BCE
Brown-grey earthenware
Cn/38
29,4 x 16 x 9 cm
Provenance: North-western China Cina (Gansu-Qinghai)
The body of this vessel has a relatively elongated shape, is slightly pot-bellied and ends in a short flared neck. Five clay bands were applied around the vessel at almost regular distances, from the top edge to the bottom. They were then crushed by hand on the surface: traces of fingerprints are still visible. The peculiarity of the container consists of a triangle of clay inserted vertically on the edge: it covers it for half of its circumference, forming a sort of high domed covering. This typology can be linked to a small group of vases called “owl-shaped”, where the holes correspond to the animal's eyes, the triangular protrusion to the head of the animal and the pot-bellied vase to its body.
