YOUNG SEATED WOMAN
Late 7th- early 8th century CE
Light earthenware, sancai glaze, pigments applied on slip
Cc/13
h 32,2 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: North-central China (Shaanxi, Henan?)
The lady sits on an hourglass-shaped stool, decorated above and below with large round flowers in relief against a diamond-cut background; four flowers in bud are added to the base of the seat. The lady's plump face and large hairstyle contrast with her thin, petite body, and small hands. The right hand clutches a flowering branch or a “mushroom of immortality” (lingzhi). The woman's face was cold painted, the rest of the statue is glazed in the mixed colors of green, cream and amber. The hair has a scrim in the center and is gathered in two large, tall buns on the sides of the head. The glazing stained one bun and the left side of her neck green.
