WOODEN LACQUERED HORSE
2nd-1st century BCE
Wood with black lacquer, red pigment for details
Cl/13.D
70,5 x 63,8 cm
Funerary statue
Provenance: Sichuan (?)
The sculpture, without the tail that was originally intended to be inserted, was made from a single block of solid wood. Carved with clean and precise cuts, it maintains memory of its workmanship in the geometric lines that enhance its volumes. The body is stocky, the legs very short, the hind train exaggeratedly developed, the chest and neck powerful, the head disproportionately large with the mane cut short. The broad, dilated froge and very protruding eyes stand out on the strongly stump profile of the muzzle. All the characteristics of the model denote a careful observation of the animal's musculature, which is however broken down into distinct volumes and is therefore exaggerated.
