WOODEN, LACQUERED HORSE
2nd-1st century BCE
Wood with black lacquer, red pigment
Cl/12.D
66,6 cm x 65,3 cm
Funerary statue
Provenance: Sichuan (?)
Apart from the tail, which is separately connected, this sculpture was carved from a single block of solid wood. Carved with clean and precise cuts, it maintains memory of its workmanship in the geometric lines that enhance its volumes. The horse was originally entirely covered in black lacquer, of which few traces remain: currently, however, the opaque brown layer used to prepare the lacquered bottom predominates. The body is stocky, the legs very short, the chest and neck powerful, the head disproportionately large with the mane cut short. The animal is portrayed in a rigid, standing pose, its mouth open in a neigh and its small ears straight forward. All the characteristics of the model denote a careful observation of the animal's musculature, which is however broken down into distinct volumes and is therefore exaggerated.
