Late 7th- early 8th century CE
Light earthenware, polychrome glaze, pigmens applied on slip
Cc/12
h 30,6 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Northern-central China (Shaanxi, Henan?)
The young woman sits on an hourglass-shaped stool decorated with a woven wicker motif. The lady's plump face and broad hairstyle contrast with her thin, petite body, and her small hands clasping her long scarf in her lap. The woman's face is cold painted, with pink cheeks on the white background, a red mouth, black eyelashes and pupils. The rest of the statue is glazed in cream, brown, blue, green and yellow ochre colours. The hair, glazed in dark blue, has a scrim in the center and is gathered in two large bunches on the sides of the head. The robe consists of a long-sleeved bodice and a short-sleeved vest (banbi). The wide pleated skirt is shaped around the narrow hips and fine thighs of the bridesmaid.
