Description
The warrior is portrayed in a standing static pose, with his large feet together and his small arms clenched: his right hand is raised under his sternum, his left hand close to the corresponding hip. The right hand has a through hole where a polearm was probably originally inserted. The overall sense of disproportion is accentuated by the enormous round head, surmounted by a domed helmet with long rectangular earmuffs. The head is then covered by a hood of the
fengmao
type (“wind hat”), which descends along the shoulders in three rounded flaps. The facial details are modeled – bushy eyebrows furrowed under a lumpy forehead, large eyes with marked eyelids, snub nose, small mouth – and painted: note the bristly black beard, the eyebrows and pupils of the same color, the red mouth.
