Second half of 7th-early 8th century CE century CE
Red earthenware, white-grey slip and polychromy
Cc/3
57,3 cm x 28,6 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Northern China
The figurine depicts a warrior standing with legs slightly apart, his arms posed as if holding weapons. The statue is characterized by a large head, slightly turned to the right, with an expressive face and detailed in a caricatural way. The head is protected by a helmet originally painted black, with a bulbous crest; the helmet has a chinstrap and the lateral edges have raised, folded wings. The warrior wears a breastplate with a high polychrome ruff and shoulder straps that leave the bracelets exposed, whose cubits with raised tips recall the shape of the helmet. The breastplates, in reality made of leather plates, are divided by a double vertical lace tied under the ruff. The crotch guard, lobed and with a raised disc in the center, and the hips are worn on multiple overlapping garments. The brown front of the shins, above the black footwear, suggests the presence of the shanks.
