VESSEL WITH SHORT NECK AND FLATTENED BASE
c. 1200-950 BCE
Beige earthenware; black and brown decoration applied over slip
Cn/22
12,3 x 17,2 x 15 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
The short, wide neck of this vase presents a truncated cone shape, and the walls are thick even at the rim. The body has a globular, flattened “drum-like” shape, with a flattened base. The decoration is poorly done, and the glaze barely covers the string imprints on the surface of the container. On the inner wall a strip of faded brown paint is visible, where four spaced pairs of black “V”s stand out, juxtaposed or slightly overlapping. A dull brown color also completely covers the outer wall of the neck, bordered and crossed without particular symmetry by horizontal black lines and oblique strokes. The most important part of the entire decoration is located around the upper part of the vessel's body: a continuous theory of large meanders, painted with a brown band bordered and marked in the center by black lines.
