VESSEL WITH CAREENED BELLY
c. 2300-1700 BCE
Red earthenware, beige slip
Cn/32
13,3 x 13 x 10,6 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
This jar is entirely covered with a light slip, which barely masks its rough, irregular, undecorated surface. It has a rather squat shape. The neck is broad, fairly high and curved, with the hem expanded. The tall body has a narrow shoulder and a slightly convex shape. Once it reaches its maximum diameter, it suddenly changes direction and closes into a narrow base. This change of direction results in an angular, careened profile. Diametrically opposed, two low-arched ribbon-like handles join the rim with the shoulder of the vase.
