VASE WITH TWO HANDLES AND HIGH NECK
c. 1200-950 BCE
Beige earthenware, slip, black painted decoration
Cn/21
16,1 x 15,3 x 10,4 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
This vase is characteristic of pottery from the Xindian culture. The degreased clay contains mica and white granules. The slip partially hides the vertical fabric imprints, which are widespread across almost the entire outer suface of the container, but which are especially visible at the bottom. The vessel has a high, wide, curved neck with an expanded rim, fitted onto a slightly convex shoulder which, having reached its maximum diameter, gradually closes towards the base. The base is concave and poorly balanced, a typical feature - along with races of soot in the lower part of the vessel - of Xindian production. The black painted decoration is not very accurate.
