TWO-HANDLED BASIN
c. 3350-2650 BCE
Orange earthenware, black painted decoration
Cn/17
13,8 x 24,8-25,3 x 12,1-12,6 x 22-24 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
Vessel of good craftsmanship, made with well-purified clay: polished on the outside, it's left raw on the inside as it's almost always the case with Majiayao culture's production. The vase is shaped like a tall basin with a wide, flattened and everted rim. The shoulder widens in corrispondence of the maximum diameter and then closes towards the bottom. Two diametrically opposed handles are applied below the middle half of the belly. Such a careened form is quite rare in Majiayao traditional basins. The black painted decoration focuses on the lip of the vessel and the outer wall above the handles. The first is decorated with concentric and circular arcs, the space between them covered with intersecting lines. The same pattern is used in the entire upper register of the basin.
