TWIN CUPS
c. 2200 BCE
Beige earthenware, black and brown painted decoration
Cn/15
9,9 x 35,8 x 15,5/16 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
The two footless cups, convex in shape and with an expanded lip, are connected to each other halfway along the belly by a tubular fitting a few centimetres long. This joint, which is usually hollow to allow the liquid contained in the bowls to pass from one to the other, in this case is closed. The external decoration, on both cups, is limited to the upper half: a red stripe below the hem, a black band and a motif of festoon arches to close the horizontal sequence at the bottom. The hem is dotted in black. The interior is completely painted, although in a different way from cup to cup. Twin vessels from the Neolithic are quite rare.
