Turtle
2nd century CE (?)
Grey earthenware, white and red pigments
Cc/48.D
28,6 x 36,1 x 57,8 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Sichuan or Chongqing (?)
This piece is a hollow sculpture of exceptional workmanship and unusual realism. The turtle, standing on its four stubby legs, pushes its neck and head upwards, its mouth open with its lower lip outstretched. The nostrils and eyes are hollow, and the latter have a particular broken oval shape. A small straight horizontal tail emerges from behind the carapace. The armor plates are raised one by one and, together with the wrinkled skin of the legs, accentuate the resemblance to a real animal. There are traces of pigment on the legs and head: red for the nostrils, mouth and part of the legs, where it mixes with white.
