TRIPODE JAR
First half 8th century CE
White-pink earthenware, sancai glaze on white slip
Cv/10
18,7 x 22 x 14,7 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Henan
The jar presents a globular body and rests on three feet in the shape of a animal paws. It has a short neck and an reverted mouth. The decoration consists of floral medallions moulded and applied. The glaze, predominantly green, stops unevenly at the bottom of the vase, partially covering its feet. The sources of inspiration for the decorations applied to sancai pottery of this era are the embossed motifs of silverware, influenced by the art of Sassanid and Sogdian metals, as well as the motifs applied to ceramics produced in Central Asia, always inspired by metal prototypes.
