Support
Provenance: Sichuan or Chongqing
The support is composed of a large wild beast fully rendered, on the back of which rises a long tubular graft with a decorative collar at the highest part. The statue is inspired by a vigorous dynamism, with the creature curled up in a strong twist and its long neck rising, arched parallel to the support column. Its head faces right, its right foreleg raised and rampant, and its left leg rests; its right hind leg is pushed forward and rests on a rocky rise, while its left leg steps backward on the rear edge of the pedestal. The face of the fair has characteristics halfway between that of a tiger and that of a dragon. Characteristic features are the thick wavy moustache, the large eyes with traced eyebrows, two pairs of longitudinal horns on the head. Above a projecting step on the creature's right side rests the full-round figurine of a toad holding a shell-shaped cup or a sort of cornucopia.
