STORAGE JAR WITH WIDE SHOULDER
5th-4th century BCE
Hard, brown earthenware; impressed decoration
Cv/54.D
50,2 x 38,1-38,6 x 19-19,4 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Low Yangzi Region (Zhejiang?)
This jar has an irregular surface with a dark brown, almost purple mixture, blackened in some places: it was made by hand with the aid of a rounded tool, traces of which can be seen on the inner wall and in some places on the outside. It has a tall, slender shape: broad and spreading on the shoulder, it progressively narrows towards base in a long, truncated cone-shaped belly. The neck is short and slightly flared, with an everted hem. The surface of the vase is completely covered with a very thin imprinted decoration that seems to be intended to reproduce the fine interweaving of plant fibres. It is made up of small squares with the vertices joined by diagonals, the path of which remains in relief. There are many gaps in the decoration.
