SLEEVE AXE HEAD
11th century BCE
Bronze with green and red patina
Cb/36.D
7,9 x 17,7 cm
Weapon
Provenance: Northern China
The axe head is quite heavy and thick, with a very rounded edge: it probably never had a sharp blade, and that it was originally used as a striking weapon. The blade is rectangular but widens at the “wire”, and is connected to an oval-section sleeve which is slightly wider towards one of the two ends. A flat rectangular tang is joined to the sleeve which apparently appears to have no functional role. Two parallel raised sections are drawn on the sleeve, imitating the laces that fixed the axe head to the handle: they surround the ends of the sleeve and converge diagonally, on both faces, from the sides of the blade towards the centre of the tang.
