SADDLED HORSE
Second half of 7th century CE
Light earthenware, slip, pigments
Cc/87
50,1 x 51,5 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi-Henan
The horse is characterized by a heightened dynamism thanks to its bent hind legs, the front left tense and the left raised; the head is turned to the left and strongly folded towards the powerful neck. The open mouth, dilated froge and muzzle muscles shaped under the skin contribute well to evoking the animal's pawing and nervous neighing. The mane is combed on the right side and the locks are well shaped. The two tufts on the forehead are longer and close to the ears, while the tail is tied simply. The saddle is composed of a thick oval caparison extended forward towards the shoulder and covered with a tied cloth, which falls in thick folds over the thigh bone.
