Pair of Heavenly Kings
First half 8th century CE
Grey earthenware, sancai glaze, pigments
Cc/5
101 x 45,7 cm
Funerary statues
Provenance: North-western China (Shaanxi or Henan?)
Imposing statues of tianwang in a dominant pose suggesting the act of subduing a demon. The head of the two statues, unglazed, was painted with cold painting technique. The two Kings have a menacing expression, with large protruding eyes, furrowed eyebrows, dilated nostrils, long raised whiskers, red mouths open in a grinding grimace. The ruff, the pectoral plates, the belly pan and the scale sides can be distinguished in the armor. The shoulder straps have the shape of a two-horned dragon with wide open jaws, with a trunk facing upwards (possible result of the Indian makara); the legs are protected by greaves and knee pads.
