MYTHICAL TREE
1st century BCE
Red earthenware, white slip, lead-based glazes
Cc/44.D
68,3 x 15 cm
Funerary object
Provenance: Henan
This object is the stylized representation of a tree trunk resting on a three-pointed hollow base. Nine short and removable branches fit horizontally into holes that are drilled on three different levels in the upper half of the trunk (three branches for each level). The trunk narrows at the end: above a round hoof is depicted a dragon's head with jaw wide open. At the top of the tree stands a crested bird, its tail protruding from the dragon's jaws and its legs clinging to its nose. Embossed, printed decorative elements are concentrated on the base and on the leaves of the tree. On one of these, there can be found a cicada and four naked men against a stylized mountain background with plant motifs; on the two upper branches, a bird and a crouching monkey are represented in the round with their backs to the leaf.
