The mighty molosser is in a standing rigid posture with its short tail folded in a ring over its back. The head, removable and barely resting, stands with its muzzle crushed and the large ears erect. Eyes, nose, and wrinkles on the forehead are rendered with a certain realism; the anus is also modeled. The dog wears red-painted harnesses on his chest: a harness with a collar at the base of his neck and other connected straps that pass over his chest and behind his shoulder. All are fixed to a raised hook between the animal's rump and neck, and extend into two short, horizontally rounded sections on the sides. Guardians of the tomb - just as the flesh-and-blood specimens were guardians of the master's domains - terracotta mastiffs have been found numerous in rocky burials in Sichuan.
