‘MAO’ SPEAR HEAD
3rd century BCE
Bronze, amber-black patina
Cb/45.D
4 cm x 24,8 cm
Weapon
Provenance: Hunan (?)
Cross-sectioned mao spearhead with straight-edge tubular graft. At its widest part, towards the bottom, the blade forms two protrusions. The threads and raised central lines are highlighted by the amber color of the metal, which peels off the black patina of the rest of the object. Furthermore, the central part of the blade has undergone a special treatment that has given it a spotted appearance consisting of small black spots on a silver background. A small triangular protrusion with a hole is placed on one side of the tubular graft and it probably served as means to fix the spear. The amber-black and spotted patina, specifically sought after by the craftsmen who made the spearhead, doesn't seem to have been altered by time.
