LARGE JAR WITH ANTHROPOMORPHIC DECORATION
c. 2400-1950 BCE
Orange earthenware, black painted decoration
Cn/9
26,6 x 22,9 x 7,6 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
This globular olla has smooth walls and is made with a fine, well-purified dough. The high, curved, thin-walled neck ends in a very flared hem. The bust of a charactered, modeled in the round, was placed on the shoulder of one of the vase's faces. This peculiar figure is made even more special by the presence of the right arm, raised and with the palm of the hand open forward. This character, perhaps a shaman, has his face painted with black lines on his forehead and on his nasal septum up to his cheekbones and on his chin (tattoos?). The palm of the hand is also black, as is the entire decoration of the vessel.
