LAMP CUP (?) WITH DOMED FOOT
Late 7th- early 8th century CE
Beige earthenware, sancai glaze
Cv/9
11,9 x 10,5 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Henan
The cup is shallow and slightly convex inside, with a wide flat rim. Eight decorative plant medallions were applied to the outer wall of the cup: four large, oval-shaped medallions with two pointed ends at the top and bottom, alternating with four smaller ones, dotted in the centre, round and placed towards the bottom of the cup. The glazing stops above the edge of the foot; the base and inside of the cup are not glazed. The predominant color is amber on the cup and foot, green on the stem. The medallions are green tinged with creamy white and are inspired by the embossed decorations of Central Asian silverware. The cup was perhaps used to hold a light source.
