LACQUERED VASE WITH A RIM AND BRONZE ‘’PUSHOU’’
4th-2nd century BCE
Lacquered wood, bronze
Cl/11.D
30,7 x 21,4 x 13,6 cm
Vessel with lid
Provenance: Central-southern China
Piriform vase on a low cylindrical foot, with a wide belly that gradually narrows into a long flared neck, with a rim reinforced by a smooth bronze gasket and with a convex lid inserted in an interlocking manner. The wood, below the lacquer, is light. Two zoomorphic bronze masks (pushou) are applied to the shoulder of the vase. The inside of the vase is entirely lacquered in black, whereas the outside is entirely covered with a thick layer of bright brown lacquer. The decoration, which does not interest either the lid or the foot, is placed between two horizontal bands.
