KEELED VESSEL WITH HIGH NECK
c. 3300 BCE
Orange earthenware, black and white decoration
Cn/10
40 x 34,6 x 13,7-14,2 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
This vase has the shape and decoration typical of older Majiayao-type terracottas, characterized by the high quality of the well-purified mixture, the angular profile of the vessel, and the rich horizontal banded decoration. From the rim the long neck slopes gently curved and connects seamlessly to the shoulder of the vessel. The body continues to expand strongly outward and, having reached its maximum diameter, suddenly reverses the trend. The main decorative band is located above the vase edge. It is made up of three equidistant motifs, formed by sparing ovals widened laterally by curved arched lines: inside each oval is painted, in black bordered in white, an oblique “butterfly” motif obtained by joining two curved triangles at the vertices.
