‘JUE’ TRIPOD
13h-11th century BCE
Cast bronze
Cb/3.D
17,9 x 14,4 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Central China
Ritual bronze tripode (jue) designed to hold and consume - and perhaps even heat - cereal wine. The walls of the belly of the jue are almost vertical and, together with the absence of important relief decorations, give the object a slender appearance. The small pillars protruding from the edge have a hemispherical section and are surmounted by knobs. The decoration is limited to three parallel lines in slight relief, which surround the upper part of the belly: they are slightly arched, and thus reflect the upper profile of the vessel. The feet are long and pointed at the end. From a stylistic point of view this jue is to be considered of late-Shang production.
