Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
This vessel is enriched by a round anthropomorphic head applied to the shoulder. It is a globular olla, expanded at the top and tapering towards the narrow base and a curved, high neck. The head is inserted below the black decorative band on the shoulder on one of the container's faces. The flattened cheeks are pierced, the other facial features carved and painted black, the neck striated like a herringbone. The eyes are incised, outlined in black and with long vertical dashes underneath – perhaps tattoos that line the face and look like tears. The nose is raised and painted, with pierced nostrils; the mouth is also engraved and marked in black.
