”Hu” vase for offerings
5th century BCE
Cast bronze in molds, inlays
Cb/8.D
35,4 x 24,4 x 13,2 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-central China (Henan)
Container with high flared neck, globular belly, flat bottom and annular foot, with seven main decorative bands divided into boxes where the designs are repeated the same four or eight times. In the upper band, birds with long legs and a stretched beak face each other, while the second band has a double series of square spiral motifs. The third band, which is the highest and to which the handles of the vase are attached, shows hunting scenes on three levels. A fourth band, which repeats the abstract motifs of the second, separates it from the next, the fifth, still dedicated to hunting scenes. In the sixth band a bird-man (shaman?) dances among stilt walkers fighting with snakes. The last band, on the foot of the vase, is decorated with lozenge motifs.
