HORSE AND HORSERIDER WITH MILITARY CAP AND CHIN STRAP
2nd century BCE
Grey earthenware, pigments
Cc/50.D
35,2 x 34 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi (?)
The horse, portrayed standing, has rather short legs and a rounded chest, a short mane and a tail knotted downwards. The coat is reddish brown, with a large red patch on the neck (left) and the headboard painted with fine lines of the same color. Similar lines, drawn in white, recall the pectoral and ventral straps and the crupper of the harness. The saddle on the back has a pointed front and is lobed at the back. The knight is sitting on the saddle and looking forward. He has both arms folded at the elbow and his fist-shaped hands pierced horizontally: the perishable bridles probably passed through the holes. The warrior wears a brown military cap, equipped with a chin strap. Above the tunic he carries a black breastplate with a white design of metal plates.
