GLOBULAR JAR WITH ZOOMORPHIC DECORATION
First half of the 1st millennium BCE
Yellowish earthenware; applied figurines
Cv/52.D
34,6 x 48,3-48,9 x 28,5-29 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Southern China (Zhejiang?)
The jar has a slightly flattened spherical body, a low neck with a strongly everted hem, a slightly concave base and no foot. The extreme irregularity of the external and internal walls indicates the type of workmanship: on the latter you can still see the fingerprints of the potter who shaped it entirely with the 'cercine' technique. The originality of this vase lies in the zoomorphic decoration arranged at regular intervals around the shoulder: eight animals – birds and lizards alternating – modeled in relief and applied vertically. The entire surface of the vessel, including the applied figurines, was subsequently imprinted with a finely squared, cloth-like pattern.
