GLOBULAR JAR WITH NARROW OPENING
6th century BCE
Stoneware with beige-ochre slip, imprinted decoration
Cv/57.D
17,9 x 26,3 x 15,5 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Lower Yangzi Region (Zhejiang, Jiangsu)
The shape and decoration of this rounded container is intended to imitate a woven basket of wicker or bamboo. The rim of the opening is recessed with the edge raised and smooth; the body is flattened, with the short belly narrowing towards the flat base, slightly wider than the opening of the jar. A decoration imprinted with relief motifs covers almost the entire external surface of the vase: it reproduces a dense interweaving of vegetal strips, with circular motifs appearing inside them. A decorative wavy band, obtained in a comb shape, surrounds the rim for just over 1 cm. The beige earthenware is covered in translucent, but lackluster, glazing that drops to about the mid-section of the belly.
