Orange earthenware with black and brown decoration
Cn/4
42,3 x 40,7 x 12,7-13,2 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
Globular olla, expanded at the top and tapered towards the narrow base, with a flared neck from the everted edge. Two small buttonhole loops are applied symmetrically below the maximum diameter of the vessel. The inside of the hem is decorated with indentations, a black stripe and double circular “festoon” arches. The neck, on the other hand, has irregular black herringbone patches. The main decorative band consists of two large, symmetrical, screen-like circles at the top of the vessel above the handles, alternating with two broad geometric patterns. Each of these peculiar motifs is made up of a sort of vertical trunk, from which zigzag bands branch out symmetrically with vertices and ends sometimes equipped with four fringes.
