FUNERARY ‘GANG’ JAR WITH PERFORATED BASE
c. 4000-3500 BCE
Beige earthenware; orange, black and brown decoration
Cn/14
40,1 x 28 x 15,8 x 25,6-26,5 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Northern-central China (Henan?)
The type of vessel is typical of Yancun funerary urns from Central and Western Henan. In this case the thick walls are oblique and irregular, the edge is slightly folded inside and thickened with a piece of clay painted orange. This is followed by a dense horizontal streak approximately 4 cm high, closed at the bottom by a painted band. In the upper part of the container thus delimited, two downward-facing hooks and a small annular loop are applied at regular intervals. The hooks allowed the attachment of a lid. The surface of the vessel was scuffed with oblique lines. The painted decoration with isolated figures of fish, birds and geometric patterns is not authentic and was added relatively recently.
