FOREIGN GROOM WITH HIS HAIR TIED
Second half of 7th century CE
Light earthenware, slip and pigments
Cc/95
36,6 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi-Henan
Character represented standing with his legs slightly apart on a thin rectangular base with rounded corners. His trunk is slightly rotated while his head is more pronouncedly so to the right, with the corresponding arm raised and folded and the left one far from his body but kept low. The dynamic pose and fisted hands (the right at face level, the left at the hip) suggest the grip of the bridle of a horse or a camel that the groom was steering. The man has marked features of the Turco-Altaic type: broad face with protruding cheekbones, flattened nose, fleshy mouth, elongated eyes, the long hair tied by a band tied on the forehead. The dress consists of a long robe above the knees, crossed on the right, with a neck with wide pointed lapels and short, narrow sleeves: it is held at the waist by a barely visible belt, which also supports a rectangular handbag on the right side.
