Second half of 7th century CE
Light earthenware, slip, pigments
Cc/86
h 40,1 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi-Henan
Character represented standing on a thin rectangular base with rounded corners, with the weight of the body carried on the left leg. The trunk and head are slightly rotated to the right, with the corresponding arm raised and folded and the left kept low and away from the body. The dynamic pose and fist hands (the right at face level, the left at the hip) underline the grip of the bridle of the animal (horse or camel) that the groom had to steer. The man has marked features of the Iranian-Caucasian type: thick beard and moustache, large aquiline nose, thick eyebrows, large eyes. He wears a high “barbarian headdress” (humao) with a rounded toe and wide repeated lapels. The dress consists of a long robe above the knees, crossed to the right, with a neck with wide pointed lapels and short, narrow sleeves.
