Description
The soldier was part of a group of four, three of whom almost certainly came from a single funerary context. The modeling is simple, but the cold colors are tastefully applied and the details carefully painted. The soldier is depicted standing, legs slightly apart, with his left arm extended along his body and his right raised at elbow height: his left hand probably held a shield of perishable material and his right a weapon, perhaps a bronze spear similar to the one he still holds tucked into the hole in his hand. The head is slightly stuffed into the shoulders. The hair - gathered in a bun behind the head - is hidden by a black cap bordered in red on the forehead; this in turn is covered, on the back, by a rectangular brown cap that was to be secured with a ruff. Despite the somewhat naive charm the statuette exudes, it is a piece of remarkable quality.
