FIGURE HOLDING A TRIBUTE
Second half of 7th-early 8th century CE
Earthenware, almost white slip, pigments
Cc/27
34,5 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi (?)
The character, probably a young woman in men's clothing, stands with her weight shifted slightly to the left. The arms are bent in front of the chest, holding a small unrecognizable object the right hand, interpreted as an offering; the left hand, also closed in a fist, remains under the right. The character is characterized by a large “barbarian headdress” (humao) high and rounded at the tip, with a trefoil edge. The character's full face has fine features, with traces of red pigment for the mouth and black for the other facial features. Like the headdress, the long calf-length robe is also foreign in style. Characters of this type usually represent tribute bearers or falconers.
