Escutcheon mask
6th century CE
Grey earthenware, white slip and pigments
Cc/38
21 x 18 x 8,6 cm
Decoration
Provenance: Northern China
Animal-shaped mask with the muzzle's features in strong relief and with small straight ears applied above the head. It has large square eyes, very thick eyebrows with the ends rolled up at the root of the nose, which is wide and flattened, an enormous deformed mouth that leaves the entire upper dental arch and lower canines exposed and has residues of red pigment inside. The round muzzle is framed by stylized beard curls. The piece shows some resemblance to the gray earth masks on the tile terminals of the Northern Wei dynasty and to certain lion heads of the Northern Qi dynasty.
