Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi (or Henan?)
The young player, part of a group that includes four other players and a dancer, is depicted sitting cross-legged on a thin square base, and holding a small drum with two raised bands in the center. She's playing the sides of the drums with both hands, fingers extended and graceful. The girl has a round face, made up of pink on her cheeks and red on her mouth, painted black for her eyelashes and eyes. A flowery inlay pattern (huadian) is drawn in red on her forehead, but the details are now difficult to read. The hair, black, has a scrimmed part in the center and is combed in a double croaked hairstyle (shuangji). The player wears a low-cut bodice with long, narrow sleeves, a white vest, and a wide, draped skirt painted orange. A long brown scarf, locked in the belt at the level of the left breast, passes over the shoulders and descends to the right side.
