Double-handle glazed amphora
7th- early 8th century CE
White-beige hard earthenware, amber glaze
Cv/2
35,3 x 20,2 cm
Vessel
Provenance: Northern China (Henan?)
Amphora with a globular body tapered at the base. The neck is high and thin, ending in a cup shape with a thick lip. Two symmetrical dragon-shaped handles branch off from the mouth to the shoulder. The junction between the neck and shoulder is highlighted by a significant difference in height, while two engraved fillets marking the passage from the shoulder to the belly. The glaze drips largely in the lower half of the vase. Vases of this type have their prototypes in Roman amphoras whose shape was introduced to China by silversmiths and glassmakers from Persia and Central Asia.
