CURVED KNIFE
4th-3rd century BCE
Gilded and silvered bronze; burnished blade with silver veins
Cb/51.D
l 28,1 cm
Weapon
Provenance: Northern China
The perceptibly curved shape of this knife is given by the slightly offset joint between the handle and the blade. The handle has a trapezoidal section that tapers towards the top: the narrowest side is the one corresponding to the blade edge, while the one corresponding to the back is slightly wider. A large oval ring is located at the end of the handle, parallel to the blade. The handle's surface apppears to be covered with a thin layer of gold and one of silver and is decorated with three rows of tall, narrow triangles. The two longest sides have three triangles in each row; the two shortest sides only have one. This type of knife with a perforated handle and ring is otherwise unknown. The presence of gold and silver work indicates that the piece can't be dated prior to the 4th century BCE, as the first works of this kinf on bronze appear in China at this time.
