CUP WITH A FLAT BASE
c. 3350-2650 BCE
Beige earthenware, painted black decoration
Cn/34
7,6 x 19,4 cm
Vessel
Provenance: North-western China (Gansu-Qinghai)
The cup, characteristic of the Majiayao culture production, was finished with a spatula and carefully sanded. Without a foot, it rests on the flattened bottom and has a homogeneous concave shape. On the outside of the vessel, the black decoration in broad brushstrokes is limited to a pattern of three festoons flattened along the rim. The main decoration covers the entire internal surface of the vessel with an elaborate play of pictorial fluidity between empty and full. The decoration of objects of this type, where even the undulations on the outside of the cup constitute a sort of extension of the central spiral, requires great mastery of the stroke.
