COURT LADY WITH FLOWER-DECORATED TUNIC
8th century CE
Brown-red earthenware, white slip, polychromy
Cc/17
h 33,7 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Central Shaanxi (?)
The lady is standing, her body slightly unbalanced to the left with an elegantly arched shape. Her hands are clasped on her chest and hidden by the drapes of her long, wide sleeves. She's fully built, with a round face and plumb cheeks and a double chin. The facial features are rendered accurately. The eyebrows and hair were drawn one by one with a very fine brush. The general expression of the face is that of a measured austerity, appropriate for a noblewoman who is no longer very young. The hairstyle called “hammer croak” (chuiji) is composed of two flat tufts above the ears and a bipartite croak at the front. The woman wears a long round-necked tunic, open at the sides, which covers a skirt (or trousers) and is held low at the hips by a thick belt. The white fabric of the dress is decorated with large spaced flowers.
