COURT LADY WITH A ‘V’ NECK
Second quarter of 8th century CE (?)
Orange earthenware, white slip, pigments
Cc/16
h 36,7 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi (Chang'an?)
The figurine, with its heavy body, represents a plump but tall woman, in a standing but not rigid frontal posture, slightly inclined to the left, with her hands – clasped on her chest – hidden by the long sleeves. She has an oval face with her mouth painted red and eyes black on a pink background. The oval of her face is accentuated by the tall black bun hairstyle, known as gaoji. The lady's body is wrapped in a loose tunic with a 'V' neckline, which is up to the feet and rendered with deep incised lines. The robe is painted red on the shoulders – perhaps to suggest the presence of a shawl– and white from the sleeves down. The ends of the shoes emerge from under the skirt, one with a high lobed decoration.
