COURT LADY WITH A BELT
8th century CE
Red earthenware, slip, pigments
Cc/15
h 40,6 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi (Chang'an?)
The statue represents a court lady standing on her left leg, with the right leg elongated laterally. She keeps her hands gathered on her chest, hidden under her wide sleeves. The face is round, with a mouth painted red and eyes black; the large hairstyle, also black, is of the duomaji(“crop of falling from a horse”) type, a deliberately disheveled hairstyle in vogue towards the middle of the 8th century CE. She wears a floor-length tunic, with the drapery rendered in deep folds, open at the sides and with a black belt low at the hips. The robe is painted pale green on the shoulders and sleeves, pink from the belly down. The footwear that comes out of the skirt is large and painted red.
