Drum support
Provenance: Central-southern China
The drum holder is composed of ten solid wood sections, symmetrical in pairs: two supports in the shape of a reclining feline; four thin wading legs; the two bodies of the birds and the two long necks. The legs are inserted into special holding spaces on the felines' backs, positioned back to back, and are inserted into the birds' bodies. These are also turned with their tails connected by mortise and tenon, holding together the interlocked long necks of the animals. The bodies and necks form the framework of the drum holder: the instrument was suspended by means of three rings tied with ropes to the crests and the junction of the birds' tails. Traces of paint still found on the surface indicate that the drum holder was originally completely decorated with opaque paints.
