CAMEL WITH LOAD OF MASKS
Second half 7th century CE
Light earthenware, slip, pigments
Cc/94
37,4 x 42,8 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi - Henan
Hollow figurine of a (bactian) camel, standing in a rigid position on a thin rectangular base. His head is raised with small ears, round eyes, large nostrils, and a closed mouth; at the top of his head is a small protuberance. The fur on the head and neck is shaped without any characterization, and the tail is also a simple flattened relief on the buttocks. The cargo, placed transversely to the animal's low humps, is composed of two large sacs covered with monstrous masks. Each mask is modeled in relief like the head of a fantastical animal: a huge, flattened trilobed nose, sunken eyes and protruding pupils, pointed ears, and two twisted horns. The mouth and jaw are replaced by the actual pouch.
