BODHISATTVA WITH NIMBUS, STANDING ON A LOTUS FLOWER
7th century CE
Gilded bronze
Cs/1.D
Buddhist statuette
The Bodhisattva is depicted standing in an elegant three-curved pose (tribhanga) with his weight shifted to his left leg. The right arm is folded outwards, the palm of the hand open upwards (perhaps holding a pearl). The left hand is also distanced, but runs down the side to accommodate the curve of the body; the hand holds a flask. The fluttering robes help give the figurine dynamism with their outward-facing ends and the fretwork effect they create by moving away from the body. The Bodhisattva's chest is encircled by a large necklace, while his round belly is shaped with a slight swelling of Indian reminescence. The bare feet rest on the flat face of a small hemispherical base with slightly raised lotus petals. The head of the Bodhisattva, adorned with a heavy crown cast over the ears and a tall croak, is made imposing by the large halo behind it.
