Wood and lacquers; traces of polychromy

96 x 60-65 x 60-65 cm
Statue
Statue of seated Bodhisattva
Provenance: Shanxi or Shaanxi
This statue probably formed a pair with another (Cs/8), which differs only in the mirror position of the arms. The Bodhisattva sits cross-legged on a double lotus seat, his hands holding in the “argument gesture" (vitarkamudra). The figure appears well-proportioned, with thin hands and an oval face expressing firmness. The head is surrounded by a tall cusp-shaped diadem, decorated with plant shoots. A heavy necklace with a central pendant stands out on the bare chest. The Chinese-style monastic robe covers both shoulders and falls to the ground in a soft drape. The inner garment is secured by a band tied with a bow.
